If you are anything like 74% of most families, then you likely spend a lot of your time hanging out in the kitchen. Whether it’s to make a snack, prepare dinner, or just stare mindlessly into an open fridge, we all visit the kitchen often throughout our time spent at home.

That said, it’s no wonder that most Canadians, 83% according to my blog survey, agree that the kitchen is the most important room in the home and should look its best, especially for resale value.

We are well into spring this year and it’s time to take a look at the top kitchen trends for 2012.

Quartz counter tops
There was a time when granite was the king of the kitchen countertop, but now there’s a new king in town and his name is Quartz. These countertops are durable and long-lasting, not to mention incredibly beautiful.

Available in a wide array of colors, Quartz counter tops have a stellar reputation and home buyers who see this magical word in home listings tend to gravitate towards them because they know that with Quartz counter tops comes a high-end kitchen.

Maple and cherry wood cabinets
While lacquer cabinets have made significant strides in kitchen cabinets, maple and cherry wood cabinets take well over 60% of the market share, and it’s no wonder with their incredible durability and their striking features.

In order to keep costs down, especially if you plan on selling in the near future, “buy stock built cabinets rather than having them custom built,” advises Commonsense Network brokerage’s Broker of Record Randall Weese.

Glass backsplashes
Backsplashes are where most homeowners get to be creative, as they usually tend to go pretty conservative with the choice of counter top and cabinetry. And while the bulk of people were adding splashes of color, in walks the new trend of using glass for the backsplash.

“It’s incredibly convenient and practical from a cleanup perspective, especially if not grout is used and you are a big fan or frying up steaks every now and then,” says ComFree’s Saskatchewan Sales and Customer Service rep Kelsie Wilson.

Natural dark finishes
While natural lighting is a big sell in most kitchens, over half of home buyers agree that a kitchen with natural dark finishes wins them over every time. There is something about a dark kitchen that adds an element of warmth and welcome.

Counters tend to be light and wood tends to be dark and the contrast seems to work together quite well. “And don’t worry about your wood floors clashing with your cabinetry; that would be like making your lipstick match your outfit – not necessary,” reveals Wilson.
Kitchen trends - pull out faucet

Pull out faucets
As a child, I remember having a sink with a regular faucet and a pull out on the left side that we used to rinse the sink. So faucet-makers concluded that the best way to make this work best was to create a two-in-one wherein the very same faucet you used could be pulled out and used to fill a pot with water or rinse the sink clean.

In the way of faucets, pull outs have become increasingly popular, as they are both esthetically pleasing and practical. There are myriad varieties on the market, with the almost industrial-looking ones taking full control of the market.
