7 Tips to Prevent Scratches on Hardwood Floors

If you’ve just restored your hardwood floors in preparation to sell your home, you’ll now want to keep them in pristine condition.  Though beautiful, certain kinds of wood can be susceptible to scratches.  Here are 7 tips to keep your hardwood floors scratch-free and looking polished.

7 Tips to Prevent Scratches on Hardwood Floors1. Be careful when moving heavy furniture

Whether moving out or just reorganizing the living room furniture, it is advisable to cover furniture legs with folded cotton towels.

This way you’ll be able to slide furniture across the floor without tearing up the hardwood finish.

Beware of furniture with wheels: they are not guaranteed not to scratch!  They could be covered with grime and dust, and therefore the thick cotton towel rule applies.

2. Avoid wearing shoes when moving furniture

Believe it or not, hardwood flooring can be scratched by your shoes.  Little bits of grit, sand and pebbles lodged in your shoes can cause damage.

If you cannot take off your shoes, at least cover the flooring or walk carefully.

3. Trim Fido’s nails

Pets’ nails are a hazard to both your furniture and your wooden floors.

Keep your dog’s nails trim by either trimming them yourself or ensuring that they get worn down with nice, long walks.

If you have an indoor cat, get him a scratching post or trim his claws.

4. Keep your wood floors dirt-free and clean

Wooden flooring is protected as long as you make sure that your house is clean. Vacuum at least once a week, and wipe up spills on hardwood flooring immediately.

5. Decorate with rugs

Protect high-traffic areas of your hardwood floor with rugs.  They’ll add to your décor and provide a measure of protection to your flooring.

6. Use door mats

Nothing can harm hardwood flooring more severely than salt and water. Wood wears down rapidly when it’s exposed to these two irritants, and the only way you can prevent this from happening is by placing a door mat at the entrance.

7. Get rid of stains

Wipe up water and liquid spills immediately.  The longer they linger on the floor, the more likely they are to stain.

Steel wool pads dipped in mineral spirit are perfect for wiping hardwood flooring. Wipe in a circular motion, or simply use a moist cloth.
