Read today’s Toronto Sun “Tips and Trends” column, by Randall Weese

You may have read one of Randall’s columns in the Toronto Sun “Tips and Trends”, or seen his name quoted in Susan Pigg’s article in the Toronto Star business section last Thursday about DIY real estate.

Randall is a licensed broker of record and has been a member of the Toronto Real Estate Board going on ten years. He started out as a traditional real estate agent, helping people buy or sell their homes and charging a traditional commission for his services.

Gradually, he started seeing a growing trend of sellers in the greater Toronto area becoming more knowledgeable about their options and more aggressive in their negotiations on commissions.

He also saw a shift in homeowners’ dependence on agents for the management of the transaction. People wanted to take control of their sale, and Randall liked what he was seeing.

“People were questioning the value in the traditional commission-based fee,” he says. So Randall adapted. When he opened his own brokerage, he and his team offered discounted commissions to their clients. For Randall, who was just starting his career, this gradual change in his approach was logical.

Randall Weese Broker of Record ComFree Commonsense Network brokerage OntarioRandall also felt it was important to establish himself as a consumer advocate and educator. “You need to pick what you’re going to be known for,” he says, “and I wanted to be known for giving solid, unbiased and honest advice for a reasonable rate.”

Randall’s move away from the traditional real estate model came at the time when the Competition Bureau was challenging CREA on its practices. He saw that as an opportunity in the market for someone with the right positioning. And that’s when ComFree network came knocking on his door.

“It was a no-brainer,” says Randall. “In talking with the company, we quickly realized we were on the same page and had the same objectives.” Randall joined the ComFree family in Ontario in 2008.

Now, as Broker of Record for ComFree Commonsense Network brokerage in Ontario since 2012, Randall shares his knowledge and experience with a whole team of REALTORS®, thousands of clients, and with other traditional agents who are curious about the commission-free model.

His role is that of an educator, giving consumers the information they need to make an informed decision about how they want to sell their home.

“I enjoy enlightening people about their choices and options, and being completely transparent. There’s no catch. There’s no elephant in the room. It is what it is.”

Of course, Randall takes the time to do more than help people sell their homes and save thousands in commission. If he’s not trolling open houses or spending time with his kids on a Sunday afternoon he might be on the golf course.
